Clozapine for the Prevention of Violence in Schizophrenia

We are doing this study to learn about the effects of treating schizophrenia with clozapine compared to antipsychotic treatment. We want to learn if this can reduce the risks of violence for people with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. If you choose to take part, we will do some assessments including blood draws, physical exams, questionnaires, and interviews.

Age & Gender

  • 18 years ~ 65 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)
  • Visits can be combined with regular clinical appointments

North Carolina (Statewide)

What will be asked of you

At each visit, you will meet with a member of the study team. You will be asked to complete interviews and questionnaires at each study visit. The study also involves blood draws, urine samples, and the willingness to take medication regularly.

Incentives

Up to $950, on a prepaid Visa gift card, assist with travel reimbursement

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • You have Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Disorder
  • You have committed of a minor or serious act of violence in the last 6 months

Not eligible if:

  • You have an unstable or serious medical or neurological condition including a myeloproliferative disorder or condition that suppresses the bone marrow
  • You have a history of intolerance/allergy to clozapine
  • You have a history of intellectual impairment
  • pregnant or lactating women; women who are able to become pregnant but who are not willing to use effective methods of birth control.
