The purpose of this research study is to create a biobank of blood and pleural fluid samples connected to a registry of medical clinical information, including genetic, general health, and disease information. This will allow researchers to do important chest, lung, and lung lining research.
You will be asked to provide researchers with biospecimens during your drainage procedure. This pleural fluid build-up will be collected by the doctor and sent for medical testing. Any extra pleural fluid that is collected but not used by your physician for medical tests will be sent to the registry to be used in future research. You may opt-in to an additional blood draw component. If you participate in the blood draw component, 40mL of blood (about three tablespoons of blood) will be drawn for the study, either from a vein or from your procedural IV.
