Study of PFAS compounds in homes

We are studying chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in indoor environments such as homes. PFAS are manufactured chemicals used in a variety of consumer products because of their water- and stain-resistant and non-stick properties. Some PFAS compounds are associated with adverse health effects. However, there are few indoor PFAS measurements even though concentrations tend to be higher indoors than outdoors and people spend most of their time indoors. The goals of this study are to measure the levels of different PFAS in homes (specifically in indoor air, house dust, airborne particles, clothing, and on surfaces), to study the chemistry of PFAS indoors, and use what we learn to make better predictions of how people are exposed to PFAS.
