Osteoarthritis Prevention Study

The purpose of this research study is to identify strategies that may prevent the development of knee osteoarthritis.

Age & Gender

  • 50 years ~ 99 years
  • Female

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)

Location

North Carolina (Durham, Orange)

What will be asked of you

To determine if you are eligible, you will meet with a study team member who will ask you some questions and you will receive a knee xray. Then, if you are still eligible, you will receive a knee MRI at a separate visit. You will then be scheduled with a study team member for another visit to complete some questionnaires and physical function/strength tests. Eligible participants will then be randomized (like flipping a coin) to receive a 4-year diet and exercise program or a health education program and will be asked to participate in yearly study visits during the 4-year study. Depending on the program you are assigned to, there will be weekly and monthly diet and exercise (or health education) individual and group sessions to attend.

Incentives

You will be paid $140 via gift cards if you complete all the scheduled study visits. , knee xray and MRI; if assigned to diet and exercise group, a gym membership; nutrition and exercise or health education information

In-person visits:
8 to 9 study assessment visits then weekly and monthly classes depending on the group you are randomized to
Total length of participation:
48 months

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • you are overweight
  • you have no knee pain or occasional knee pain
  • you are willing to travel to the UNC Campus or Chapel Hill/Durham area for up to 2 days a week for 2 years

Not eligible if:

  • you have knee pain or diagnosed knee osteoarthritis
  • you are planning to leave the area > 2 months during the next 48 months
  • you have symptomatic or severe coronary artery disease
  • you are unable to provide own transportation to and from intervention site
  • you are unable to walk without a device
