Perinatal Sleep and Light Therapy Study

We want to learn whether adding light therapy and a prescribed sleep schedule to your usual care can treat depression during pregnancy and after delivery.

  • 18 years ~ 45 years
  • Female

Location

North Carolina (Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Graham, Guilford, Orange, Wake)

What will be asked of you

If you choose to participate, you will complete 7 study visits (4 times during pregnancy and 3 after delivery). At each visit, you will meet virtually with a member of the study team and complete sleep and mood assessments. We also will collect saliva samples, and you will complete a 7-day sleep diary at Visits 2, 4, 6, and 7. You also should be willing to wear a sleep wristwatch for the length of the study. If you are randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to the light therapy group, you will be asked to sit in front of a light box every morning and follow a prescribed sleeping schedule.

Incentives

up to $570, All participants will have their sleep and lights levels measured. If you decide to participate in an optional breastmilk collection, you will receive a breast pump. An Infant T-shirt will be given for participation.

Total length of participation:
about 8 months

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • You have depression
  • You have difficulty sleeping
  • You are between 24-28 weeks pregnant

Not eligible if:

  • You have a medical history of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and/or schizoaffective disorder
  • You have active psychosis
  • You have a high risk pregnancy (e.g., conditions requiring mandatory bed rest or complex medical regimens that will interfere with study participation)
  • You experience frequent migraines/headaches caused by bright light or sleep deprivation
  • Current/active alcohol or drug abuse
