South Asian American Celebrity Endorsements in Political Campaigns

This dissertation explores celebrity endorsements in political campaigns - specifically South Asian American celebrity endorsements of Kamala Harris. My research will explore the ways in which endorsements are used in racially/ethnically or culturally specific contexts. I will examine endorsements by South Asian American celebrities such as comedian Mindy Kaling, YouTube star and late-night show host Lilly Singh, and Broadway actress Shoba Narayan - all who have created media content that extends beyond encouraging people to vote for Harris. To supplement this, I will interview these celebrities or members of their production team to explore how they leverage their shared South Asian heritage with Harris. I will also conduct interviews and/or focus groups with South Asian American groups/organizations to discuss their perceptions of these celebrity endorsements, Kamala Harris, and representation on in entertainment media and politics.
