Southern Liver Health Study

The purpose of the STRIVE study is to research environmental exposures that contribute to liver cancer. We take samples from people who are healthy, and those with liver disease. We look at the amount of heavy metals and other substances in blood, urine, and saliva, as well as samples from the participants home, such as soil, water, and dust.

Age & Gender

  • 40 years ~ 75 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Visits can be combined with regular clinical appointments

Georgia, North Carolina (Statewide)

What will be asked of you

Biological samples: Blood, urine, and/or saliva Questionnaires: Dietary, Medical/family medical history, environmental exposure questions Home samples: Air (wear a wristband for 1 week), soil (if applicable), dust, and water

Incentives

$50 per visit, Sample results

2 visits over 2 years (1 initial, 1 follow-up)

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • Between the ages of 40-75 years
  • Currently living in North Carolina
  • Otherwise healthy
  • Diagnosis of liver cirrhosis

Not eligible if:

  • Have had, or have plans to receive a liver transplant
  • Have had a past or current diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Plan on moving outside of North Carolina within the next 2 years
