Community participation is an important part of quality of life in adulthood. However, many autistic adults lack community participation opportunities. Volunteer work or community service is one form of community participation which has been shown to improve mental and physical health, social connection, employment readiness, and quality of life amongst non-autistic adults. We want to know if participation in these kinds of volunteer activities could meaningfully impact quality of life for autistic adults as well.
You will be matched with a local community service organization to complete volunteer work for 3-5 hours per week for 9 weeks. You will also attend pre and post program visits before and after your volunteer experience. During these visits, we will ask you to complete some questionnaires and share feedback. You will also be given a small GPS tracking device and asked to wear the GPS tracking device for 1 week before and after the program as a measure of your community participation.
