The purpose of this research study is to estimate the future cardiovascular disease risk in pregnant women and their infants. We will use questionnaires, maternal and infant central pulse wave velocity (PWV) which is a measure of arterial stiffness (vascular aging) that predicts cardiovascular disease. This non-invasive instrument is totally safe in pregnancy. By measuring the time it takes for blood leaving your heart to reach your leg with the use of 2 small cuffs, it is able to determine arterial stiffness which is a key component of cardiovascular disease.
At each visit, the study staff will measure your pulse wave velocity, draw a small amount of blood, email you some questionnaires regarding lifestyle, sleep behaviors, diet and well-being for you to do at home. Once your baby has been born, we will also measure his/her pulse wave velocity. At delivery, we will collect a small amount of cord blood and a segment of placenta. There will be an optional infant blood draw at the 6 and 12 month follow-up visits.
Up to $350 for completion of all study visits and questionnaires
