Measuring cancer cells in the blood of head and neck cancer patients receiving surgery

The purpose of this study is to measure circulating tumor DNA (cancer cells) in the blood of head and neck cancer patients prior to surgery and monitor how these levels change over time.

Age & Gender

  • 18 years ~ 99 years
  • Male, Female

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)

What will be asked of you

We will ask for blood sample(s) prior to surgery and a piece of tumor for biopsy after surgery. Every three months, you may be asked to give blood at your in-clinic visit.

Looking for Specific Volunteers

Able to participate:

  • Histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, including the following subtypes: oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx
  • Must be planning to undergo gross total resection of the primary tumor with curative intent at UNC-CH hospital
  • Age ≥ 18 years of age on day of signing informed consent
  • p16 IHC or HPV negative HNSCC for oropharyngeal primary tumors only
  • Patients who receive adjuvant therapy with radiotherapy +/- chemotherapy based on either standard of care (SOC) or appropriate clinical trial

Not eligible if:

  • Have known evidence of metastatic HNSCC disease based on clinical or radiographic studies
  • You are pregnant opr nursing
