The Effect of Carbon Fiber Shoes on Running Economy

We are assessing differences in running economy (oxygen consumption) in shoes with and without a carbon fiber plate in trained male and female runners.

Age & Gender

  • 18 years ~ 99 years
  • Male, Female

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)
  • Weekend hours, if needed

North Carolina (Statewide)

What will be asked of you

During visit one participants will be familiarized with the testing equipment and complete necessary medical screenings for the study. Participants will complete a maximal aerobic capacity test during visit 2, and a blood lactate measurement will be performed. Visit 3 will be comprised of 6 separate 5-minute running trials. 3 different pairs of shoes will be worn in total.

Incentives

VO2max test results, gait kinematics and analysis.

Looking for Healthy Volunteers

Requirements for healthy volunteers are different than for those with a specific condition. If you are interested in becoming a healthy volunteer for this study, use the below categories to determine if you are able to participate.

Able to participate:

  • Under 18-minute 5k run (males), under 21-minutes 5k run (females), or comparable performance in another distance event, in the past year.
  • Men's shoe sizes 10, 10.5, 11 or 12
  • Womens shoe sizes 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, and 9

Not eligible if:

  • You have a pre-existing cardiovascular, neuromuscular or orthopedic condition
  • You had an injury that affected running or training ability in the past 6 months
  • You currently train in a carbon fiber running shoe.
