We want to understand why sedentary behavior (e.g., sitting too much) is bad for the heart and the brain. We also want to test ways to reduce sedentary behavior. This will help us to create a large clinical trial to test whether reducing sedentary behavior can decrease cardiovascular disease.
You will be asked to make 6 visits to the Cardiometabolic Lab at UNC. At the first visit, we will familiarize you with what will happen in this study. You will then make 4 separate visits to the Cardiometabolic Lab. These visits will be in the morning and you will be asked to arrive having fasted the previous night. At each visit, we will insert an IV to collect blood throughout the visit and replace fluids lost through sweat, and then take some noninvasive measurements related to blood pressure and blood flow. We will then feed you a standard breakfast and then take some more measurements. We will then ask you to sit for 4 hours while watching a television program but remaining still. For one of the visits, you will sit the whole period. For 3 of the visits, we will break up your sitting by asking you to stand and/or walk. At the end of the 4-hour period, we will repeat the measurements. At the end of these visits, we will ask you to return to attend a 90-minute focus group, so we can ask you questions about the different strategies used to break up sitting.
$100 for each of the experimental visits and the focus group, up to $500, $20 gas reimbursement for each of the experimental visits and the focus group, up to $100
