This is a research study to compare the safety and effectiveness of two different ways to treat asthma. The first way is adding inhaled corticosteroids to your rescue medication (the medicine that opens your airways quickly). The second way it using an antibiotic over time. These treatments will be used alone or together and compared to usual care plus a system to track asthma symptoms at home. We hope to find out who will do best with each type of treatment, which is not known at this time.
You will have one visit to enroll in the study. Every patient will be given online asthma symptom tracking tools that have been shown to help manage asthma symptoms. Some participants will use a second inhaled medicine with their regular rescue or quick relief medicine. Some will start taking an antibiotic pill. Some will use both. The groups are assigned by chance, like a flip of a coin. Participation lasts for 3 months. Each month you will answer questions about your asthma through an online or telephone survey.
You will receive $50 for the time it takes to review the consent form and complete the initial survey with a research staff member. This may be done in person or over the phone or through a computer video visit. You will be paid $20 for each monthly survey you complete
