Sedentary Behavior and Heart Health

We now know there is a link between sedentary behavior (e.g., sitting) and heart disease. However, we do not yet fully understand if sedentary behavior performed in different settings and situations (e.g., sitting alone watching television vs sitting with friends at a bar) differentially impacts heart disease risk. This is what this study aims to find out.

Age & Gender

  • 18 years ~ 24 years
  • Male, Female, Gender Inclusive

Visit Availability

  • Standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)
  • Extended hours (M-F, early morning or evening)

What will be asked of you

You will be asked to complete two identical lab visits (2 hours per visit) separated 12 months apart. During these lab visits we will ask to collect blood pressure-related measurements, a small blood sample, body composition measures, and questionnaire data. Visits will take place in the Cardiometabolic Lab (Fetzer Hall). After the lab visits we will provide you with wearable devices to monitor your sedentary, physical activity, and sleep behaviors over 7 days, and you will be asked to complete some short questionnaires throughout the day. During this 7 day period you will simply be undertaking your normal day-to-day life.

Incentives

$100 gift card ($50 gift card for each visit) and a chance to win one of several Apple watches., You can receive information about your heart health (e.g., DEXA body composition scan results, blood pressure), and the experience of taking part in world-leading heart disease research. Free parking on the UNC Chapel Hill campus.

In-person visits:

Total length of participation:
2 lab visits (2 hours per visit) seperated 12 months apart, and 2 seven day activity/sleep monitoring periods during normal day-to-day life
