How Do North Carolina Educators Teach About Slavery? A Study

This study seeks to evaluate whether current NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) K-12 social studies standards adhere to national best practices about teaching slavery. To measure this, the study is utilizing a survey methodology and in-person interviews to gather feedback from teachers. Broadly, the survey illuminates how teachers approach teaching hard history topics and whether directives and implementation help. Specifically, the survey will collect information about the topic of slavery. By doing so, I hope to synthesize and analyze the data to share successes regarding teaching slavery for other educators and to determine the best way to improve future NCDPI K-12 social studies directives.
