Public Memory of the Plantation

This study is interested in how our collective memories of the past shape our lives in the present, how they construct or shore up identity, and how they manifest in the built world around us. This research attends to the ways that material practices of remembrance-museums, memorials, and monuments-related to the history of the Transatlantic slave trade operate rhetorically to uphold or challenge investments and identities in American public life. Particularly in a moment of active public discourse around this subject, I maintain a rhetorical perspective that engages questions about how, when, and where this discourse occurs and what publics and counter-publics it constructs. This study aims to interrogate the effectiveness of material and discursive rhetorical decisions in such sites by developing critical insights and perspectives for the operation of museums, memorials, and heritage sites in North Carolina and Louisiana.

Evaluating the impact of solar home system adoption on human well-being in Malawi

Only 11% of Malawi's population has access to electricity. Solar home systems offer a low cost source of reneweable energy to households without access to reliable and affordable electricity grid infrastructure. Our study explores the impact of adoption and use of solar home systems on access to lighting services, access to charging services for phones and appliances, and overall well-being as a result of improvements in living conditions. We hope to inform policy makers in Southern Africa about the potential and limitations of supporting solar home systems uptake as a strategy for addressing severe energy access in the region.

Accountability for Care through Undoing Racism & Equity for Moms (ACURE4Moms)

Pregnancy complications are increasing in the United States, and this is worse for Black patients, who are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy than White patients. Pregnancy complications and deaths cause large physical, social, and financial burdens for patients and their families. Our study aims to decrease pregnancy complications for all patients, but especially for Black patients, by decreasing institutional racism and bias in healthcare and improving community-based social support during pregnancy.

Key-informant interviews to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food access in western Chatham County, North Carolina

We will conduct key-informant interviews with low-income individuals, food service workers, restaurateurs, farmers, and agricultural workers to learn about COVID-19's adverse public health effects on food access among vulnerable populations in western Chatham County. Information from the key-informant interviews will eventually be used to inform the design and implementation of a food hub to stimulate and coordinate food system purchasing and donations, help food supply and distribution systems adapt to COVID-19, and subsidize meals for low-income and food-insecure individuals.
