George Floyd Square: Resistance, Forced Migration, and Policing in South Minneapolis

I am interested in understanding how George Floyd Square came to be. I am also interested in learning how the South Minneapolis community organizes to resist police violence. This project contributes to decolonization scholarship by theorizing, through the example of South Minneapolis, forced migration and containment as colonial policies that are enforced through policing and that produce literal and social death for racialized Others.

A Study of an Inhaled Salt Solution Following Exposure to Wood Smoke

Deployment of military personnel has been associated with increased respiratory illness likely due, in part, to inhalation of unusual particulate matter (PM), such as from burn pits. Inflammation is a key initial response to inhaled particulates. Our center has developed a protocol using inhaled wood smoke particles (WSP) as a way to study PM-induced airway inflammation. Exposure to wood smoke particles causes symptoms, even in healthy people, such as eye irritation, cough, shortness of breath, and increased mucous production. The purpose of this research study is to see if a single treatment of inhaled hypertonic saline (HS) can diminish this PM-induced airway inflammation by rapidly clearing the WSP inhaled particles from airway surfaces. The exposure will be 500 ug/m3 of WSP for 2 hours, with intermittent exercise on a bicycle and rest. The wood is burned in a typical wood stove and piped into the chamber.

Stop Consonant Study

The purpose of this research study has two parts. One part is to determine if a new test of palatal closure during speech in 2 year-old children with repaired cleft palate will predict palatal closure at older ages. The other part is to find out if some common speech problems in children with repaired cleft palate get better as a child gets older.

Influence of design elements and disclaimers on user assessment of social media health and political content

This study will test the effect and effectiveness of labels on political ads that disclose the use of generative AI. Governments and some internet platforms have begun requiring that political advertisers include these disclaimers, however we lack experimental study of the effect and effectiveness of these disclaimers.

Virtual Reality Study for Concussion

We are examining relationships between physiological responses (pupillary response and heart rate variability) and performance-based measures during a memory task completed in a virtual reality (VR) environment-in UNC club sports athletes. We are also examining the effects of a prior concussion on these measures.
